Meet the Leaders Shaping Lexington’s Future: Julie Zimmerman
Join the fight for our values
Julie Zimmerman is running to represent South Carolina House District 71 because she understands what’s at stake and she’s ready to fight for the families who call this district home. Julie has called District 71 home for nearly 25 years. During that time, she has raised her daughter here, built deep community ties, and witnessed firsthand the changes, challenges, and opportunities facing local families. Some of her most meaningful memories were made right here; teaching her daughter to drive along the rural roads around Chapin and Lake Murray, watching sunsets at the Ballentine marina, and developing a deep appreciation for the land, water, and sense of peace that define this special part of South Carolina.
The Root: What is your favorite local spot, tradition, or memory in Lexington County, and how does it shape the way you view our community?
When I think about Lexington County, it’s the everyday moments that mean the most to me. I taught my daughter to drive on the roads around Lake Murray. Those drives are some of my favorite memories as a mom. From sunset at Lake Murray and quiet back roads to the annual return of the purple martins, these moments remind me why protecting the natural beauty of Lexington County is so important.
The Daily Reality: Aside from politics, what is your day job or daily routine, and how does it open your eyes to the actual struggles facing working families in our district?
Outside of politics, I work as a licensed therapist ( LPC) in Irmo. Every day, I see how financial stress and life’s challenges impact the mental health of people in our community. My work as a therapist and founder of Irmo Neighbors Helping Neighbors has taught me that strong communities are built by showing up for one another, especially during difficult times. That is the same approach I will bring to the State House: listening, serving, and working to improve the lives of the people I represent.
The Fix: If you could fix one frustrating daily problem for families on your block tomorrow morning, what would it be?
If I could fix one frustrating issue facing South Carolina families tomorrow morning, it would be expanding Medicaid so everyone has access to affordable, comprehensive healthcare including access to quality mental health care. Expanding Medicaid is one of the most meaningful steps we can take to improve the lives of South Carolina families. As a licensed therapist, I see every day how access to quality healthcare, including mental healthcare, changes lives. Expanding Medicaid would help more families get the medical, dental, vision, and mental healthcare they need without having to choose between their health and paying the bills.
The Vision: Why are you stepping up right now when staying on the sidelines would be easier? What gives you hope for the future of South Carolina?
I’m running because I want everyday people to have a stronger voice in Columbia. As a therapist, I’ve seen how financial stress, limited access to healthcare, and uncertainty affect individuals and families every day, and I know these challenges deserve practical solutions, not political talking points. That’s why I’m committed to a common sense, compassionate, community driven approach to leadership. My goal is to work to build a South Carolina where every family has the opportunity to thrive
