Meet the Leaders Shaping Lexington’s Future: Jeremy Jones
Putting Common Sense Back Into Columbia
I know working for a living. Not a single current legislator punches a clock that isn’t their own. I know the grind.
I have worked as a substitute teacher in Lexington 1 schools, helped businesses navigate the COVID pandemic, worked for the state Medicaid program, and currently work as a claims examiner.
A Columbia area native, I was born and raised in Forest Acres–just outside of Columbia proper. I attended schools in Richland 1, graduating from A.C. Flora High School in 2011 and earning both a BA and an MBA from University of South Carolina Aiken in 2017 and 2023, respectively.
My mom worked for Dominion Energy (formerly SCE&G) for 35 years before retiring, and my older brother went on to attend the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and serve in the U.S. Army for 20 years. In 2017, my mom and I moved to Red Bank looking for home and we found it here.
The Root: What is your favorite local spot, tradition, or memory in Lexington County, and how does it shape the way you view our community?
My favorite local spot is Creekside Restaurant because I can get breakfast and a conversation with a new person and this makes me happy and it makes me view district 88 because it’s a place where I can make friends with random new people every day.
The Daily Reality: Aside from politics, what is your day job or daily routine, and how does it open your eyes to the actual struggles facing working families in our district?
My day job is working from home as an FMLA Claims Examiner and it’s not a wealth making job. It helps me pay my bills and hear about the things that regular workers are going through while trying to save their jobs from a health condition that may be debilitating. Having a job should not be the reason why people have healthcare and insurance. And we need to have paid medical leave for our workers.
The Fix: If you could fix one frustrating daily problem for families on your block tomorrow morning, what would it be?
The thing I would fix for families on my block tomorrow morning I would make it so that for the amount those families pay for HOA fees that we would have an HOA that cut everyone’s grass. A lot of families have a hard time with work, life balance, kids, and sickness that the least the HOA can do is cut everyone’s grass.
The Vision: Why are you stepping up right now when staying on the sidelines would be easier? What gives you hope for the future of South Carolina?
I am running for District 88 because I see how bad policy has affected my life, my family, and the lives of South Carolinians. As a person living with a mental health disability, I have fought back against bad policy that the State House has produced. I find that the SC government across the board lacks a sense of purpose and vision in our leadership. I want to be a part of the change for a positive South Carolina and not a negative one that creeps about in the SC government now. What gives me hope is that South Carolina voters have an opportunity to select a new government, including the Governor’s office. The Democratic Party has a visionary leader who cares about South Carolinians, and I want to help create a majority for him to work with to better our lives.
